I think American society does contain a lot of shame, it's just about the wrong things. Like class: not having money, or not having the ingrained cultural knowledge to look like 'old money' or be familiar with fine-dining etiquette. Or shaming some among us for being who they are: through the structural erasure of LGBTQ people and stories from government websites, for instance. Bring back shame for individual actions that produce systemic harms.
